Community Support
CRH’s US Subsidiary, Oldcastle, supports Habitat for Humanity in its mission to provide affordable housing. In 2010, Oldcastle sponsored a Habitat home-build in Atlanta Georgia. Pictured with the homeowner are some of the employee volunteers who assisted in the project over a seven-week period. Oldcastle also donated building materials for the project.

Alternative Fuels
The first delivery of solid recovered fuel (SRF) to Irish Cement’s Platin plant in Ireland took place in 2010. CRH is increasing the amount of alternative fuels used in its cement plants, saving fossil fuels and decreasing CO2 emissions.

Sustainable Products
Oldcastle Materials has pioneered the use of warm mix asphalt, which requires 15-30% less energy than traditional asphalt. Shown here is the first use of warm mix asphalt in the state of South Dakota, USA, laid by CRH subsidiary Hills Materials, at a residential neighbourhood in Rapid City.

Biodiversity
Northstone has an extensive biodiversity management plan covering all of its extractive locations and actively encourages local biodiversity in partnership with local stakeholders.

Biodiversity
The Oldcastle Materials Wildlife Leadership Team is working with the Wildlife Habitat Council, the non-profit group of corporations, conservation organisation and individuals dedicated to restoring and enhancing wildlife habitats. There are currently 12 certified wildlife habitat sites at Oldcastle locations across the US, with more preparing for certification of existing biodiversity programmes.

Sustainable Products
CRH managers at Stradus Infra Belgium proudly display their air-purifying pavers, which remove atmospheric pollutants from the air. The pavers have been used at several projects in Antwerp city centre.

Fatality Elimination Plan
The CRH Fatality Elimination Plan is a Group-wide initiative based on the implementation of 11 Fundamentals for Fatality Elimination relevant to Group operations. These Fundamentals are on the top of the agenda at every operational meeting.
